The Rhinoceros viper (bitis nasicornis) has its home in Central Africa and lives on the ground of tropical forests. In its preferred living areas near rivers and lakes, it is as good
a swimmer as an excellent climber.
It owes its name to its distinguishing marks: two steeply upward pointing, noticeable horn appendices are situated on the tip of its mouth between its nostrils at the end of
the other typical mark, an “arrow head“, on its head. It has the triangle head shape of all bitises and a relatively thin build. It is seldom longer than 1.3 metres and is therefore not among the bitis giants.
